Lick

A micro poem searching for catharsis in response to triggers and trauma. — Lick me, said wound to tongue wet with desire, like salivating at honey, pressed on pooling shallow gorges of skin as if, like water neutralising caressing soothes rinses, reconstitutes that biting pain reiterating lick me again pretty please.

The Jaguar and his twinkly gloves

A Short Amusing Anthology — My neighbour Joáo is a taekwondo junkie. He had lost a handful of consecutive fights months before winning the most recent sparring tournament against Tennessee, his regular Mr Miyagi-meets-Rocky, black belt national champion opponent. This time, even I thought Tennessee looked rather tired. I pondered privately at his lack of…

Dawn

POETRY — The morning after coffee. I sit to write, write to feel, feel for a word — reach for a pulse, steady for a rouse, as a slow dawn unpeels me gently from this warm chair.

Nascent

From a distance I watched the budding of first leaves green on your brown barren arms outstretched, as if to give me a hug saying, since when do you watch me now when once you didn’t give a fuck.

Today, I am grateful for…

You, for love. For reading… me, my words. You, for hope. For loving… me, my wounds. You, for songs straining repeatedly, into my past. You, for strength. For upholding, believing in my gifts.

Making This Year Meaningful

In response to Nancy Blackman’s 30-day writing challenge, what do you need to do by the end of the year to make this year meaningful? “But somewhere out there across the moonlit sand There’s a line drawn, like the lines on her own” ~ Opus 40, Mercury Rev. There is…

The Road Home

A Poem — Between the kindergarten and the church is the road home. It is a long walk home. I look for shortcuts but there are none. The church is peaceably and deathly, perch to catch the tropical breeze. I take my time across its pews, admiring its narrow grey aisles. Some days, I stop to say an awkward prayer even if I did not understand, yet home is a calling, so I carried on walking.
